Bijin-ga art in Japan refers to various forms of “a beautiful person.” However, in the Edo period, the terminology applied mainly to “Beautiful women.” Therefore, the bijin-ga Eishōsai Chōki’s art is firmly based on the depiction of beautiful ladies in beautiful clothes.

Chōki is known to be extremely active in the late 18th century until 1808. However, little is known about Chōki to any great extent. Therefore, speculation and an incomplete puzzle remain.

Chōki and the esteemed Utamaro (1753-1806) were students of Toriyama Sekien (1712-1788). The artists Utamaro and Torii Kiyonaga (1752-1815) are strongly felt in Chōki’s work. In saying this, Chōki also produced a nice atmospheric angle for several of his backdrop-related artwork.

Independently of bijin-ga involving “Beautiful women” Where “Inner beauty of women” – or other terminologies – this art form became very popular during the Edo period.

Notable artists who have made sublime bijin-ga include Toyohara Chikanobu, Suzuki Harunobu, Torii Kiyonaga, Ito Shinsui, Uemura Shoen, Utamaro and a few other selected artists. However, Chōki also created adorable bijin-ga art. Hence, it belongs to the crème de la crème of the artists mentioned above.

Overall, Chōki has created adorable art that evokes images of a softer side from the Edo period. So, although this was an illusion for the majority of women during the Edo period, as in all societies around the world during this period of history, you can admire beauty in such simplicity.
